Review "Green ICT Camp"

Our first "Green ICT Camp" took place in Berlin from September 2-6 - and it was a complete success! The dates for the next two camps have already been set: March 24-28, 2025 in Nuremberg/Erlangen and September 1-5, 2025 in Dresden.

40 students from all over Germany spent a week exploring the topics of sustainable technology development and research opportunities in the field of green microelectronics. The first camp was organized by Fraunhofer IZM, Fraunhofer HHI and the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH) as part of the "Green ICT @ FMD" competence center for resource-conscious information and communication technology.

During the week, the students immersed themselves in the topic of ecologically sustainable microelectronics. During excursions to the three FMD institutes Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Fraunhofer IZM and Fraunhofer HHI, they gained in-depth insights into research and engaged in discussions with scientists and industry representatives.

The workshops were accompanied by lively discussions, which often even continued into the break times, as the students were fully engaged and very enthusiastic. The participants were particularly pleased with the hands-on experience that FMD gave them.

The week culminated in a gala evening at which the students presented what they had worked on during the week. There was also a motivating speech by Dr. Andreas Berns (VDE/VDI Innovation), who attended on behalf of the BMBF.

This was followed by the first FMD Science Slam, which was organized with the support of IHP and gave science slammers from IHP, Leibniz FBH and Fraunhofer IPMS a stage.

Vier FMD-Wissenschaftler:innen beeindruckten mit kreativen und packenden 10-minütigen Pitches:

  • Sebastian Schulze (IHP) with „Wafer Bonding – A story of Food and Superheros“
  • Abhijeet Kanitkar (FBH) with „Is my Transistor the best one?“
  • Annika Wandesleben (Fraunhofer IPMS) with „The Connection between Chip Production and the search for a sugar cube in Lake Constance“
  • Costanza Manganelli (IHP) with „Yoga and Light“

We would like to thank everyone who supported us with the preparations and the implementation on site and thus contributed to making this first camp a complete success. We are already looking forward to the next camp, which will take place on March 24-28, 2025 in Nuremberg/Erlangen. The third camp will take place in Dresden from September 1-5, 2025.
