networks such as 4G and 5G enable wireless communication via cell phones, smartphones and other mobile devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Wireless networks (WLAN)<\/strong>: WLAN technology enables wireless connections between devices and the Internet, which increases flexibility and mobility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Cloud computing<\/strong>: Cloud computing technologies enable access to computing resources and services via the Internet without them having to be available locally on the device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Big data and data analytics<\/strong>: These technologies enable the collection, storage and analysis of large amounts of data in order to gain valuable insights and trends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Artificial intelligence and machine learning<\/strong>: These technologies enable computers to perform complex tasks, recognize patterns and make decisions without being explicitly programmed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>IoT (Internet of Things)<\/strong>: IoT comprises networked devices and sensors that can communicate with each other and with the internet in order to collect, transmit and process data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" Calculate now!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Why is ICT relevant for the environment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental impacts do not arise \"in the product\" but during the manufacture of components, through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use of high<strong> energy <\/strong>with harmful emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use of environmentally harmful <strong>chemicals<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use of scarce and environmentally critical<strong> raw materials<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Semiconductor components are particularly harmful in production. These include \"ICs\" or \"chips\" manufactured in clean rooms. These components can account for over 50 % of the manufacturing costs of a cell phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">How harmful to the environment is chip production currently<sup data-fn=\"b867c719-484e-4759-a04b-a10555912886\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"b867c719-484e-4759-a04b-a10555912886-link\" href=\"#b867c719-484e-4759-a04b-a10555912886\">1<\/a><\/sup>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The smaller the structure size, the higher the power requirement per wafer during production:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>28 nm chip: approx. 400 kWh<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&lt; 10 nm chip: up to 1200 kWh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Emissions in the semiconductor industry worldwide:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left translation-block\">176 million tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> equivalent in 2022 (this corresponds approximately to the total emissions of the Netherlands)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Daily water consumption of a semiconductor factory:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up to 99 million liters (demand of 220,000 German four-person households), 75% of which for production processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up to 50 million liters of ultrapure water (UPW). 1.5 liters of tap water is required per liter of UPW.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20 million liters for cooling and air filtration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">What raw materials are in ICT?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Various raw materials are used in information and communication technologies. Purchasing refurbished products saves resources and is also cheaper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your cell phone longer. A cell phone usage period of 5 years including a battery change already reduces the annual emissions of a cell phone by as much as <strong>31%<\/strong><sup data-fn=\"2ef76bee-001d-4cea-bdc0-24545c342a66\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"2ef76bee-001d-4cea-bdc0-24545c342a66-link\" href=\"#2ef76bee-001d-4cea-bdc0-24545c342a66\">2<\/a><\/sup>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 the Green ICT @ FMD competence center do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The aim is to use the structures created in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forschungsfabrik-mikroelektronik.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">FMD<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> (13 research institutes, including 11 Fraunhofer and 2 Leibniz) for application-oriented microelectronics research to support an expansion in terms of resource conservation and <strong>reduction of the carbon footprint<\/strong> in the further development of ICT applications and ICT infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three core technology projects, the Green ICT Hubs, are researching and working on making ICT
